Who Are You?

       Who Are You?

    We were showing Barry
    Mayson's video in the
    Windsor Jail recently and I
    was really struck by a
    comment Barry made about
he not knowing who he was.
    This got me thinking about
how most of us don't truly
    know who we are.

I think that much of this
comes from the  pack of lies
    we have bought about
    ourselves.  Some of those lies
    come from other people.
    They point out every failure,
    short coming and inadequacy
in us. Some of those lies
    come from the evil one.
    Satan's desire is to destroy
us and he will whisper every
    negative thought and exploit
    every negative circumstance
that he can in our lives.
    Finally, we lie to ourselves.
In fact I will be bold enough
to say that we lie constantly
to ourselves. "I can't do this."
"Why did I ever try?"  "What
    was I thinking!"

    Not all lies are negative.
Sometimes the lies puff us up
with stuff that is good for the
    ego, but not much else.
Satan's first lie was a promise
that "you will be like God".  All
of this piles up and leaves us
    feeling that we are something
less or different than we truly
    are.   These lies distort our
    perception of who we are.
    We don't know ourselves as
God sees us and we end up
    being something other than
what God has intended us to
    be.

    We "through faith are
    shielded by God’s power"
    (1 Peter 5:5).

    We were chosen "before the
creation of the world to be
    holy and blameless in his
    sight." (Ephesians 1:4).

We are called to live "a holy
    life." (1 Thessalonians 4:7)
and we are being made holy
    (Hebrews 10:14).

    "For we are God’s
    workmanship, created in
    Christ Jesus to do good
    works, which God prepared
in advance for us to do."
    (Ephesians 2:10).

We are "sons of the light"
    (1 Thessalonians 5:5).

    And, we are no longer
    condemned (John 3:18).

I could go on and on, but I
    think you get the picture.

So how can we get God's
    perspective on who we truly
    are?
  • I think the first way is rather
obvious - read the Bible.  You
can start by looking up the
    passages I have sited above.
  • The second one is just as
obvious pray - talk to God
    about it.
  • A third way is through
    fellowship.  Other believers
can assist us in getting God's
    perspective.
  • And, finally - persist.  You
have a lifetime of lies to undo
and the lies are still coming at
    you, so you need to
    continuously work at.

So what is the truth about us?

We are made in God's image
    and that was "very good"
    (Genesis 1:21-31).

We have "hope and a future."
    (Jeremiah 29:11).

    We have been chosen by
God to be "rich in faith and to
    inherit the kingdom"
    (James 2:5).

    We are "children of God"
    (1 John 3:1).

    We are "made righteous"
    (Romans 5:19).

    We are loved by God
    (John 3:16) and nothing can
    separate us from that love
    (Romans 8:39).

We have "a spirit of power, of
    love and of self-discipline."
    (1 Timothy 1:7).

We have a mission "I am
    sending you" (John 20:21),
    "Go into all the world"
    (Mark 16:15).

We have peace "my peace I
give you"  and we do not
    need to be afraid
    (John 14:27).

Jesus is in us and his Holy
Spirit has been given to us
    (John 14:16-20).

    Because of God's word, we
    are clean (John 15:3).

We will bear fruit (John 15:5).

    We have authority to
    "overcome the power of the
    enemy" (Luke 10:19).

We are "strong in the Lord
    and in His mighty power"
    (Ephesians 6:10).
